Affordable & Sustainable Design

The 2015 UN Climate Summit

In early December 2015, Juan Carlos Linares, LUCHA’s Executive Director from 2013-2019, was invited as a Delegate to the UN Climate Summit in Paris, France.  Funded through the Emerging Leaders Fellowship of the Chicago Community Trust, Mr. Linares had the privilege of traveling to Paris to join more than 1,000 leaders from around the globe to discuss and collaborate on innovations that impact our climate and our environment.

As LUCHA’s representative, Mr. Linares discussed the need for more sustainable design in affordable housing development and the steps that LUCHA has taken to address this issue. To this end, below you’ll learn about some of the knowledge exchanged at the Sustainable Innovation Forum as well as the impact of some of LUCHA’s sustainable design work since then.

The Passive House

LUCHA’s most recent affordable housing development, Tierra Linda, features a multi-family Passive House, the first of its kind in the city. The Passive House effectively meets green standards of energy efficiency and reduces utility costs for its residents.

The Illinois Green Mission Award

In May 2019, LUCHA was awarded the Mission Award by the Illinois Green Alliance for Tierra Linda and its Passive House. The Mission Award is the highest honor and recognizes sustainable building projects in alignment with the Illinois Green mission.
