Keep Chicago Renting

Back in  2013, LUCHA participated in a citywide coalition which passed the Keep Chicago Renting Ordinance (KCRO) to protect renters impacted by the foreclosure crisis. In  2015, we came together again to increase protections to renters under KCRO. Since the foreclosure crisis, gentrification has been fueling mass evictions throughout Logan Square, Humboldt Park, and the northwest side. Recently, Iris* came to LUCHA when the building she lived in was sold and the new owner forced all the tenants to move out immediately. As a single head of household, this put a tremendous burden on her. Our dedicated legal team was able to leverage the Keep Chicago Renting Ordinance and secure an award of over $6,000 for the household as well as extra time for Iris and her family to transition. While Iris would have rather been able to move back to Puerto Rico, she loves her new apartment here and is grateful for the help she received from LUCHA’s Law Project. She referred the remaining tenants in her building to our Law Project as well. Should you hear of an unjust eviction such as Iris’, please refer your friend or family member to our Law Project right away – time is of the essence!   *Name changed to respect confidentiality
