As a leading member of the Puerto Rican Agenda’s Housing Committee, LUCHA, along with Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation, Hispanic Housing Development Corporation, and the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, convened a Housing Summit this month to facilitate discussion and propel the Latino community towards preserving and strengthening housing in our neighborhoods.
“I think the housing summit was great in bringing together housing advocates, community members, elected officials, and organizations that have worked hand in hand in educating each other about the current issues,” said Executive Director Juan Carlos Linares.
Keynote speaker Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove, Professor of Urban Policy and Health at The News School in New York City, spoke of the similar yet unique circumstances that have created housing crisis’ in cities across the globe, and called on practitioners to use their own experiences as assets in fighting displacement.
LUCHA admonished Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez and the other Latino elected officials from each level of government to address housing issues as immediate crises impacting families in their districts. “We have a great set of individual representatives but unfortunately housing hasn’t been front and center in their agendas for a long time. … I think there was an immediate outcome, though, that they have become aware that housing issues are immediate in their communities,” remarked Linares.
