Honoring Alma Zamudio

As many of you know, our friend and colleague Alma passed away last Friday. Alma worked with us at LUCHA from May 2013 to February 2015 as our Community Organizer. She advocated fiercely for our tenants and community members and was passionate about organizing around workers rights and social justice in general, but especially toward advancing housing as a human right. On this, Alma was a guiding north star for LUCHA.

Inspiring LUCHA to activism and community building in myriad ways, Alma was a key voice in restarting the Humboldt Park Residence tenant council, and for strengthening LUCHA’s stance on housing policy as we engaged with elected officials in our city and state. Alma was also the original organizer for Tierra Linda, for which she led the initial community engagement phases. She was well-known among our residents, who often approached her first in their times of need.

Alma was caring, energetic and a natural born leader. She was respected, admired and loved by her friends and colleagues. We will remember her fondly and with endearing memories, and our thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Juan Carlos Linares

Executive Director
